Highlights

  • On the 17th of August 2020, 417 new confirmed cases and 2 deaths were recorded in Nigeria
  • Till date, 49485 cases have been confirmed, 36834 cases have been discharged and 977 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory
  • The 417 new cases are reported from 17 states- Lagos(207), Kaduna(44), Ondo(38), Abia(28), Anambra(21), Plateau(20), Bauchi(13), Oyo(9), Ebonyi(9), Delta(7), Edo(7), Enugu(6), Niger(3), Gombe(2), Ogun(1), FCT(1) and Kano(1)
  • A multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, continues to coordinate the national response activities

PRESS RELEASE Renowned Academic, Prof Afolabi Ojo, Passes On at 90

Pioneer vice-chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Gabriel Jimoh Afolabi Ojo (KSG, CON), has passed on at the age of 90. Prof Ojo transited in his sleep on the afternoon of Sunday, August 30, 2020, at his Ikeja residence in Lagos.   The brains behind distance learning in Nigeria, Prof Afolabi Ojo was a teacher all his life and authored over 140 books and academic articles. He was Chairman, Presidential Planning Committee on the Open University System in Nigeria (1980-81) and was then appointed as pioneer Vice Chancellor of the National Open University (1981-1984). Away from academics, Professor Ojo was an active member of the Catholic Church, as well as the local communities in Ado-Ekiti, Ife and Lagos. Kegite Club International known to be Supreme comradium can be traced to thirteen students of the then Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, who gather themselves every evening to relax after a hard day work. Upon hearing that their college would become a university the next morning, the excitement combined with ecstasy for being the first set of undergraduate of the university of Ife drove them on an enjoyment galore. The thirteen foundation students became the executive and periodically they donated palm wine for the consumption of the group in turns. Not before long, history was made as they became founding members of the first socio-cultural club in the world.
