Opinion: Abuja to Kaduna for 6K

Commuters between Abuja and Kaduna will have to pay more for train tickets from July 29. This was according to The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who resently said the Abuja-Kaduna rail service would resume in spite of the on-going Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Mr Amaechi said after due considerations, President Muhammadu Buhari, agreed that the fare be reviewed to accommodate well meaning Nigerians.

He said the fare for the economy class was reviewed to N3000 and the Business class, N6000.

As expected, different reactions have trailed this announcement.

Expecting every public service to be free is the reason NITEL, Nigerian Airways, Colonial rail service and others went moribund.

People who were reluctant to pay a monthly bill of N2,500 to NITEL now pays upwards of 25k to GLO and MTN for the same period. Today, some still question why they should pay an electricity bill of 10k per month. Only in Nigeria is electricity far cheaper than mobile telephone bill.

Fare on UK train service was reviews upward with effect from January 1st this year, commuters were made to start paying an average of 2.7% more for train tickets. The rise, announced by industry body the Rail Delivery Groups in November 2019, was lower than the 3.1% increase at the start of last year. This has been the trend globally as countries are moving away from over burdening government spending on public service.

I am of the opinion that for this rail service to continue to be a going concern and not go the way of its predecessor,  Nigerians should joyfully pay the N3,000 and N6,000.
