Clark, Aliu and the continuum By Dare Babarinsa

By Dare Babarins Birth. Death. The period of existence in-between is what we call life. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, first Premier of the defunct Western Region, in his twilight years, said death is actually the beginning of “life afterlife.” He explained further that “life is a continuum.” The Yoruba people believe that death, Iku, is a messenger of Olodumare. Unlike other deities and messenger of the Supreme Being, death cannot be appeased. There is no need to propitiate a deity who is permanently deaf to all entreaties. If Iku was not hard of hearing, maybe we could have appeased him to tarry a while before Major-General Dapo Adebayo, the former Director of the Nigerian Army Corps of Education, was summoned home. Adebayo died on September 23. General Adebayo was a complete officer and gentleman. There was a time we thought he would become the Director-General of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, but that one passed him over. The last time I saw him was in Ado-Ekiti when we both att

75 Years Harvard Study Reveals the Ingredients to True Happiness

Image
In a recent TED talk, Psychiatrist Robert Waldinger described some of the secrets to happiness, which were revealed in a recently released 75-year-long Harvard study. For over 75 years, Harvard’s Grant and Glueck study has tracked the physical and emotional health of two groups: 456 poor people in Boston from 1939 to 2014 (the Grant Study) 268 graduates from Harvard’s classes of 1939–1944 (the Glueck study) After following these groups and testing them (e.g., blood samples, brain scans) for several decades, the findings have been compiled. Here’s the conclusion: “The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.” — Robert Waldinger, director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development Apparently, we should value love above all else. It’s the main thing in life that brings us happiness. Once you see what really made people happy over three-quarters of a century, you won’t need to assume what will make yo

Spirit, Soul and Body - How we are designed

Image
We human beings are complicated. Every one of us is unique, with different backgrounds and personalities. But with respect to how God created us, we’re actually all the same. Our body through its five senses contacts the visible, touchable, tangible things of the material world. It’s the most outward and visible part of our being, and by it we exist and experience the things in the physical realm. But of course, we’re more than just a physical body. Our soul, though unseen, is just as real as our body. By our soul, we experience things in the psychological realm. In fact, the Greek word for  soul  is  psuche , which is also the root word of  psychology . Our soul is composed of our mind, which enables us to do things like think, reason, consider, remember, and wonder; our emotions, which enable us to have feelings like happiness, sorrow, anger, relief, and compassion; and our will, which enables us to choose and make decisions. Our mind, emotion, and will make up our soul, which is our

EDO DECIDES

By Akorede Soremekun I went, saw and discovered the intriques  that led to the shocking defeat of APC in Edo. The truth is APC candidate lost to "FATE" cabals who had eat fat into our common heritage.  As a Historian and political strategist, I was able to discovered that indeed, Ize-Iyamu lost to "THE FATE" cabals whose interest are all about 2023 Presidential Elections not for the development of the EDO State. The Word "FATE" is an acronym for Fayemi, Amaechi, Tambuwal and El-Rufai. They sit in the APC to actualise their selfish interest above collective interest of the Party. Same things played out in Bayelsa, the main opponent of Lyon David was not Seriake Dickson nor Douye Diri but this FATE cabals who think they must stop Tinubu camp. Indeed they are enemies in the house.  I was surprised that  some people are mocking me because my candidate and Party lost in Edo State.  What  do they want me to  do?  To run amok?  To die? Or change allegiance from
